Dress Code


 

Standardized uniforms may be purchased from an official school uniform vendor or from a vendor of the parent’s choice.

Standardized dress must be worn at all times during the school day unless a change is authorized by the building principal for special occasions.

Standardized dress must be neat, clean, in good repair and the correct size. Over sizing, drooping, low-ride hip huggers and skin-tight apparel are not acceptable dress patterns.

Clothing must not have any logos, insignia, expressive messages or embellishment other than the approved school logo in the location specified in the style manual.


If an article of clothing is purchased with a name-brand logo on the garment, that logo must be removed or covered with the approved school logo. Clothing purchased from the school uniform section of many uniform suppliers will meet this requirement if the supplier has purchased Winona logos for resale.

Caution is advised against adding the school logo to a garment except by a qualified vendor or a local individual who has access to the professionally printed logo. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that any logo added is the approved school logo. These logo emblems must be an official iron-on emblem or a machine-monogrammed emblem. Painted or hand-drawn emblems are not classified as an official school logo.

On days when students will be participating in field trips, school officials may request that a specific top and bottom be worn for security purposes. For this reason, each student will need to purchase at least one official school uniform consisting of approved red tops and khaki bottoms.

It is certainly not expected that students will purchase every item of clothing that has been approved. Students have the choice of selecting from the approved options after securing at least one official school uniform. If a parent or student is ever uncertain whether an item will meet the district uniform policy requirements, please consult the style manual or seek the advice of the school principal BEFORE removing tags. This will provide the opportunity to return the item if it is not in compliance.

“String” is the lightest khaki color that is acceptable for uniform attire. If there is a question about the khaki color, sample khaki colors will be in each principal’s office for comparison. Any color lighter than “string” will not be acceptable as a khaki color even if the garment is labeled khaki.

SHIRTS:
POLO SHIRT: No trim, must have collar. Long or short sleeved. Solid red, solid gray or solid black. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show.
OXFORD SHIRT: Button-down banded collar. Placket front. Long or short sleeved. White. No trim. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show.
TURTLENECKS: Solid red, solid gray, solid black or solid white. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. Turtleneck shirts must not zip of button. They must be the standard pullover type. See statement below for sleeve length.
T-SHIRTS & UNDERSHIRTS
: (No tank tops). If worn, must be solid white without any print or graphics (other than approved WPS logo), and may only be worn underneath the standard uniform. Undergarment sleeves may be no longer than the top shirtsleeve unless the undergarment sleeve reaches to the wrist.

ALL UNIFORM SHIRTS WITH BUTTONS MUST BE BUTTONED.
ALL SHIRTS MUST BE TUCKED INSIDE THE LOWER GARMENT.


SLACKS (Flat front or pleated):
Solid khaki (only approved khaki color) or solid navy classic style with belt loops for grades K-12. (Elastic waistbands, instead of belt loops, are acceptable for grades K-3). Must sit at natural waist. Side-slit inner pockets only. No cargo or other outer pockets. Must be cotton twill or cotton blend. No jeans or knits. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. Frayed or slit ends are not acceptable.

SHORTS:
Solid khaki (only approved khaki color) or solid navy classic style with belt loops for grades K-12. (Elastic waistbands, instead of belt loops, are acceptable for grades K-3). Must sit at natural waist. Must be at or near the knee. No shorter than two inches above the knee, and no longer than two inches below the knee. Side-slit inner pockets only. No cargo or other outer pockets. Must be cotton twill or cotton blend. No jeans or knits. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show.

SHIRTS:

SPORT COLLAR BLOUSE: Long or short sleeved, Red, black, gray, or white. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. Cotton or cotton blend. No knits, no denim.
OVER BLOUSE: (K-12 worn only by special permission) Long or short sleeved, Red, black, gray, or white. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. Cotton or cotton blend. No knits, no denim. Must be buttoned.

Solid Khaki (only approved khaki color), solid navy, or approved red/gray plaid for all grades. Skirts and jumpers must be at or near knee or longer. Skorts must be no shorter than two inches above the knee. A larger size garment may be necessary to obtain the correct length for both skirts and skorts. Must be cotton twill or cotton blend. No denim or knits. No logo (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. Sample of approved plaid may be obtained from principal’s office of each school.

HOSE and TIGHTS:
Solid white, solid navy, solid black or skin tone

NECK SCARVES AND TIES ARE NOT CONSIDERED TO BE PART OF THE UNIFORM.

SWEATERS and VESTS:
Sweaters and vests may be solid red or solid gray with no trim. Must be worn over uniform shirt. No logos (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show.

CREW SWEATSHIRT:
Solid red or solid gray with no trim. Must be worn over uniform shirt. No logos (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. May have hoods.

Solid red or gray with no trim. Polar, fleece, Nylon, etc. Pullover or zipper front. No logos (other than approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show. May have hoods.

POLAR JACKETS and VESTS:
Solid red or solid gray with no trim. Polar, fleece, nylon, etc. pullover or zipper front. No logos (other than the approved WPS logo on left chest) or other brand or store labels may show.

JACKETS AND COATS:
Coats, windbreakers and jackets may be either of the two styles listed below:
1. Solid red, solid navy or solid black
2. Predominately red, navy or black with complimentary vertical or horizontal stripes of white, navy, black or gray. This style must be at least 80% solid red, navy or black.

Coats with narrow piping of white, red, navy, or black will be acceptable.

The only acceptable logo will be the approved Winona School District logo and must be on the left chest of the coat. Any additional insignia or writing must have school board approval.

Coats may have a zipper, velcro or button-style front or may be a pull-over type.

Coats may have a plain collar or a hood; coats may not have a fur collar.

BELTS:
Belts must be worn, must be the correct waist size and must be fastened if the slacks or shorts have belt loops. (Elastic waistbands are acceptable for grades K-3). Belts cannot be hanging below the natural waist. Plain or braided belts in dark solid black, plain or braided dark solid brown leather or synthetic leather, or plain elastic in black, brown, navy or khaki for all grades are acceptable. Belt buckles must be plain standard buckles. Belts cannot have elaborate designs and must be appropriate for the waist size. No chains on belts or wallets. No logos or other brand or store labels may show.

SOCKS:
Solid white, solid red, solid dark navy, solid khaki or solid black. Must be at or above the ankle and no higher than the knee. No logos or other brand or store labels may show.

SHOES:
Shoes that tie, buckle, velcro or slip on. All slip-on shoes, including sandals, must be enclosed in the back or have a strap to secure the shoe on the foot. Predominantly one color. No designs. Must be closed heel (tennis shoes, dress shoes, casual shoes or slip-on shoes). Shoes shall be properly tied, if applicable. Boots may be worn with slacks only. No house shoes, flip-flops, shower shoes or steel-toed boots. Laces must be only one color and cannot contain glitter, fluorescent coloring, etc.

DUE TO CHANGES IN STYLES, IT IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO IDENTIFY SPECIFICALLY EVERY ASPECT OF CLOTHING AND ACCESSORIES. THEREFORE, THE SCHOOL RESERVES THE RIGHT FOR THE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL TO MAKE PERSONAL JUDGMENTS CONCERNING THE DRESS CODE AND STUDENT DRESS WHEN NECESSARY.
